Karen's True Story
To try and stop the spread of the Swine Flu (H1N1) virus, on April 29, 2009, the Fort Worth School District, comprised of 140 schools, 80,000 students and 11,000 faculty and staff members, suddenly closed all of their schools for a seven day period. Here were Karen's thoughts:
- When I first hear about the Swine Flu in the US, I casually dismissed it and thought - "We don't have to worry about things like that around here."
- When I heard that the middle school my son is to attend next year had a probable case of Swine Flu, I listened a little closer, but still thought - "It's only one case."
- When the Fort Worth School District suddenly closed all of their schools I LISTENED, AND I THOUGHT - "This is really happening, and a lot of parents will be unable to go to work, and a lot of companies in the Fort Worth area will need to enact their business continuity plans in order to continue operations."
In retrospect... My children remained home with me for the seven days, but I was still able to work. It was a little distracting, but they were home, safe, quarantined, and the actions taken by Fort Worth stopped the spread of this virus in our area.
